2023 - Graduation Collection

Throughout my third year at the Institut Français de la Mode, I developed my personal collection, which serves as the final project of the bachelor program.

My starting point was 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick, a cult film that explores the human condition through various stages of evolution. I drew inspiration from its aesthetics: the muted and metallic color palette, the silence, the futuristic costumes and above all, the film’s philosophical and societal depth.

The film opens with the iconic chapter The Dawn of Man, where early hominids, guided by the mysterious appearance of the Black Monolith, discover their ability to use a bone as a weapon, a symbol of power, conquest, and violence. This brutal transition marks the birth of territorial domination.

The narrative then shifts to the space age, where humankind seeks to extend its conquest into the cosmos, constantly pushing the boundaries of ambition. It is here that HAL 9000, the film’s emblematic artificial intelligence, comes into play, embodying the machine’s rebellion against its creator. Designed to be infallible, HAL ends up betraying the crew, highlighting the vulnerability of humans in the face of their own technological creations.

Through my collection, I wanted to explore this idea of human fragility: the illusion of control, the inevitability of being overtaken by the machine, and our inability to protect ourselves from it.

My choice of materials reflects this narrative.
I used cow bones raw and primitive elements coated in projections of velvet and silver, evoking the iconic bone from the film’s mythic scene, thrown into the air and seamlessly transformed into a spaceship in a symbolic time jump of several millennials.
I incorporated wood, referencing early human construction, alongside carbon fiber an ultra-modern material used in aerospace and space technology to signal the transition into a hyper-technological era.

This collection was truly a long journey of experimentation, trial and error one that taught me how a project evolves, from a simple idea into a complete and coherent collection.
